 The Robinson Report

Breaking News for the Families of 6th, 7th, and 8th Graders
 August 2010 Edition

I am delighted your student will be in my room this year. Please feel free to visit the classroom as often as you can make it – you are welcome at any time. I encourage you to be as involved with your student’s education as you possibly can.

I would really like to emphasize the importance of your student knowing their math facts: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. By middle school, it is expected that these facts are mastered - which means the answers come as quickly as your own name!  If they aren’t, math becomes very time consuming and much harder work - it significantly impairs your student's ability to succeed in math. If your student has not mastered them, please invest in a set of flashcards and go over them EVERY SINGLE DAY with your student.

It is also important in middle school that your student have a set time and place (without distraction) to do their homework.    A good rule of thumb is that school work at home shouldn’t take more than about 60-90 minutes per evening. If your student is consistently spending more time than that, please let me know. And remember, middle school students are social creatures and like nothing better than a little company while they work – especially if it means being near you. Turn off the TV and have a quiet time in your home during school work time. Your student will flourish from your support.

And just so you know. . .

*Every Wednesday and Friday there is a spelling test.

*Each student will receive my cell number in case they need to reach me and can’t get me at home or school. Please try the home and school numbers first before using the cell – but please do use the cell if you need to.

CLASSWORK
Your student should bring home their assignment book daily with all assignments written in it - not just the incomplete ones.  This helps all of us stay in touch.

UNEXCUSED LATE WORK POLICY
Unexcused late work one day late will receive an automatic 10% reduction.  Unexcused assignments two days late receive a 20% reduction.  After two days of unexcused lateness, the grade drops to a zero.  Please note:  if students call me the night before the assignment is due (or sooner) to make reasonable arrangements, their work is not considered late.  I encourage phone calls!

CALENDAR
All of our school and class events, activities and trips are listed on the website calendar. This will be a regular way to communicate news with you.

ONLINE GRADES AND ATTENDANCE
Our system for communicating current attendance reports and grades is online. I will be sending home login information for each of you. First, you login to the school website, then into the student report section. No one can login to your student’s grades unless you give them the access codes.  Please let me know if you do not have internet access so that I can send home a paper copy of progress reports.
